Does Your Gear Matter?

Night photography by Nick Oman Photography

Better gear won't make you a better photographer! It can however allow you to take better photographs.

I like most photographers started out with a entry level DSLR camera. It had the basic functions that are important to learn, but the image quality with the kit lenses was iffy at best. I added a nifty fifty and the quality improved enough that all I used from that point on was that 50mm lens(not easy to get wide landscapes with a 80ish mm lens). Soon the photography bug had taken a firm hold and I knew this was what I wanted to do forever. The next step for me was a big one, $$$ Full frame land $$$.

At first I wondered if I had wasted my money, mostly because you hear photographers say it's not the gear that makes a photographer good. Usually said photographers have some of the best gear money can buy. Anyway, I spent some time shooting various scenes and getting better acquainted with the ins and outs of my new friend(sometimes the camera is your only companion out in the middle of nowhere). Each time I came out more and more impressed with the ability to get top picture quality in almost any situation. It opened the doors to take just about any photo I wanted and my creativity was now only limited by well, my creativity. For me, that was worth every penny I spent.

I'm not saying that you have to go out and get a brand new flagship dslr from Nikon or Canon to shoot great photos. I have seen some amazing images from phones after all. What I know from experience is that to get the best out of yourself you have to have equipment that doesn't put a limit on you. Whatever that may be. If you need something discreet like a Fuji or Sony for street photography or you need a Canon 1Dx or Nikon 4Ds speed demon for sports, make sure it doesn't put a hold on your art.

***I am really happy to have my friends at Pictureline, a local Utah company, as a partner with Nick Oman Photography. They can help you with all of your photography and video needs.***
